BOAT SAFETY

EXAMINATION AND CERTIFICATION

Boat Safety Scheme

What is BSS Certification?

Just like a car, on most of the UK’s inland waterways, a boat needs to be licensed, insured and have the boat equivalent of a MOT – valid BSS certification – before it can cruise, or in some circumstances moor.

Boat Safety Examination & Certification

Boat Safety Examination Service

James Lowe, a certified Boat Safety Examiner with Tortuga Marine Services, offers professional safety assessments to guarantee your vessel meets all current legislation and safety standards.

His thorough inspections help ensure your boat is not only compliant but as safe as possible for everyone on board and other waterway users.

On successful completion of the examination, James is authorised to issue your official Boat Safety Certificate – this is an official document that has been approved by navgiation authorities, ensuring you are compliant on the waterways.

What is happening during the inspection?

On the day of your inspection, James will meet you at your boat or agreed point, a brief check will be conducted to verify the information you have given and the examination will be conducted – although we try to complete the examination as soon as possible, this can take up to 3 hours.

Once the examination is completed, you will receive verbal feedback about the result.

We aim to have the inspection details and vessel information uploaded to the BSS database within 48 hours, and an electronic copy of your certificate will be sent to the email address you provided.

BSS Certificates are valid for 4 years.

If your vessel does not pass first time, Tortuga Marine Services can help you with any works or products you may need, and if we do not offer the service you require, we have a list of trusted contractors in most areas to help you prepare for the re-test.

How to prepare for a boat examination?

Preparing your boat before its examination will pay off – please find the boat safety checklist on their website – Private Boat Requirements | Boat Safety Scheme

Apart from checking to see that installations, components and fittings comply with the requirements before the examiner arrives, there are several things you can do to make the whole process run smoothly.

Firstly, have to hand any documents of the vessel history, appliance booklets, receipts of works that have recently been undertaken (since the last boat safety).

A critical point is that all key operating systems must be capable of being checked effectively and accurately (seen and reached). Make sure the area is clear and accessible for the examiner. Making sure any access panels are taken down before the examination begins
